Compress a GIF for Discord

Discord has different size rules for chat attachments, custom emoji, and stickers — and those numbers change. Here’s a plain map of the common caps, then a browser-local path on Fogkits to shrink a GIF with a target size and preview before you upload.

  • Message ≠ emoji ≠ sticker — different caps and formats
  • Browser-local gifsicle — free, no upload for this tool
  • Target KB · preview the loop · no Discord acceptance guarantee

Free, browser-local. Need a still under 100KB instead (not for GIF)? Compress an image under 100KB.

Your GIF stays on this device

Fogkits GIF Compressor runs Gifsicle in WebAssembly in your browser. The original animation is not sent to Fogkits servers for this tool — no account and no credits required to download. Passport photo and background removal on Fogkits are separate server products — not this page’s CTAs.

Quick answer

Chat, emoji, and stickers are different jobs

Discord uses different size rules for chat attachments, custom emoji, and stickers. A GIF that fits free chat may still be far too large for a custom emoji. Fogkits GIF Compressor shrinks GIFs in your browser with Gifsicle — free, no upload — so you can set a target size, preview the loop, download, and upload to Discord yourself. Fogkits is not affiliated with Discord; always verify Discord’s current help before you rely on a number.

Discord size limits (message vs emoji vs sticker)

Discord experiments with limits and updates help pages — verify the linked Discord articles before you rely on a number. Snapshot researched 2026-10-30.

Custom emoji (static or animated GIF)Must be under 256 KB; JPEG/PNG/GIF/WEBP; animated = GIFTarget ≤256 KB; downscale toward ~128×128 first when the canvas is huge
Custom stickersHelp cites 512 KB, exact 320×320, static PNG / animated APNG (not GIF)GIF Compressor is GIF-only — use for chat/emoji GIFs; sticker upload needs Discord’s sticker formats (verify sticker help)

Chat attachments

For everyday message uploads, Discord’s File Attachments FAQ recently cited about 20 MB for free (non-Nitro) accounts after an August 2026 raise from 10 MB. Nitro Basic is cited at 50 MB, Nitro up to 1 GB. Discord notes it experiments with limits, and it checks file size before compression — so the file on disk is what matters. Custom emoji

Custom emoji must be under 256 KB. Supported formats include JPEG, PNG, GIF, and WEBP; animated custom emoji use GIF. Discord’s add-emoji guidance recommends uploading up to about 128×128 (they display smaller). Source: Custom Emojis · How to Add Emojis on Discord.

Stickers (format honesty)

Custom stickers follow separate Discord help: commonly 512 KB max, exact 320×320, static PNG and animated APNG — not a GIF chat attachment. Fogkits GIF Compressor helps when your job is a GIF for chat or emoji. Sticker creators should follow Discord’s sticker upload formats. How to compress a GIF for Discord on Fogkits

Browser-local gifsicle WASM — set a target KB, preview the loop, download, then upload to Discord yourself. Not affiliated; no acceptance guarantee.

01

Open the GIF Compressor

Open the Fogkits GIF Compressor.

02

Drop a GIF

Drop a GIF (GIF only on this page). Soft client input is about 20 MB on typical desktops, or about 10 MB on some low-memory devices — that is a Fogkits tool limit, not Discord’s rule.

03

Dial quality, target size, max width, and frame skip

Dial quality, optional target size (KB), max width (640 / 480 / 320), and frame skip when motion can tolerate it.

04

Preview the loop

Compare the before/after preview — watch the loop, not just the byte count.

05

Download and upload to Discord

Download when it looks good enough, then upload to Discord yourself. Compression runs with Gifsicle in WebAssembly inside your browser — Fogkits does not upload the animation for this tool.

Emoji tip: Aim the target under 256 KB and shrink a huge canvas toward ~128×128 first.

Chat tip: If you are only over a multi‑MB free attachment cap, a milder pass (or max width alone) may be enough — verify the live Discord free/Nitro number for your account.

Quality vs size tradeoffs

Higher quality

Keeps more detail but may miss a tight KB target.

Hard target KB

Runs stronger passes until the file fits or the tool finishes — expect dither, fewer colors, or a softer look on heavy sources.

Max width first

Often the cleanest first lever for oversized canvases (try 640 / 480 / 320).

Frame skip

Every 2nd or 3rd frame helps when motion still reads. Always judge the preview loop for your job (chat reaction vs crisp emoji).

There is no honest “lossless + tiny” promise for a heavy GIF.

Still images vs GIFs

This Discord GIF guide is for animated GIFs. Still JPG/PNG/WebP under a form cap belong on Compress an image under 100KB and the Image Compressor — do not force a GIF through the still-image path.

Frequently asked questions

Does Fogkits upload my GIF when I compress it for Discord?
No. Fogkits GIF Compressor runs in your browser with Gifsicle in WebAssembly. The original animation is not sent to Fogkits servers for this tool. You download the result locally, then upload it to Discord yourself.
Is the Fogkits GIF compressor free?
Yes. Browser-local GIF compression is free — no account and no credits. Download when the preview still looks good enough for your chat or emoji job.
What’s the difference between Discord chat limits and custom emoji limits?
They are different rules. Discord’s File Attachments help recently cited about 20 MB for free chat uploads (Nitro tiers higher; experiments may vary — verify live). Custom emoji must be under 256 KB, with GIF allowed for animated emoji. Hitting the chat cap does not mean an emoji will accept the same file — set a much smaller target for emoji.
How do I hit a Discord size target on Fogkits?
Open the GIF Compressor, drop your GIF, and set an optional target size in KB (for emoji, aim under 256 KB). Use max width (for example 640 / 480 / 320) and frame skip when the loop still reads. Preview the animation, download, then try the Discord upload. Soft client limits on Fogkits are about 20 MB in (10 MB on some low-memory devices) — that is a tool input cap, not Discord’s rule.
Will compressing ruin the GIF quality?
Stronger passes can add dither, fewer colors, a smaller canvas, or fewer frames. Start gentler, preview the loop, then tighten the target. Max width and frame skip are often cleaner first levers than crushing quality alone. There is no promise of “lossless + tiny” for a heavy GIF.
Should I use the under-100KB image guide for a Discord GIF?
No. That guide and the Image Compressor are for still JPG/PNG/WebP. Animated GIFs belong on the GIF Compressor. For animation-suite depth (convert/split/etc.), see Fogkits vs Ezgif.
