Can You Smile in a Passport Photo? US vs UK Rules
A US passport photo may show a natural smile. A UK photo needs a closed-mouth neutral expression. See the difference and what gets rejected.
For a US passport photo, a neutral expression or a natural smile is allowed, as long as both eyes are open and the face stays fully visible. For a UK passport photo, keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed. Do not copy the US rule onto a British application.
A restrained, closed-mouth frame is the safer choice when you are applying to more than one country, or when the smile starts to change the shape of your eyes.
What counts as a US natural smile?
The US Department of State accepts a neutral expression or a natural smile. The face must still look like you. Both eyes stay open, the camera is at eye level and nothing hides the forehead, eyes or chin.
A natural smile is a small, relaxed change around the mouth. It is not a posed studio grin. If the cheeks push up, the eyes narrow or the teeth dominate the frame, take another photo.
Fogkits does not judge expression automatically. After the US preset crops the photo, you still have to check the mouth and eyes yourself.
Why a UK photo is stricter
GOV.UK asks for a plain expression with your mouth closed. A smile, even a slight one, can fail a UK printed or digital check.
If you need photos for both countries, shoot several frames in the same sitting: at least one closed-mouth neutral frame for the UK, and extra natural-smile frames only if you are submitting a US application. Then crop each file with the matching United Kingdom or US preset. Do not reuse one smiling crop for both.
Do teeth matter?
The US rule is not a simple teeth-versus-no-teeth test. A broad grin still fails more often because it changes the eyes, cheeks and jaw. For the least ambiguous US result, relax your mouth. For the UK, keep the mouth closed.
Do not digitally close a smiling mouth. Retake the source photo.
Baby and infant expressions
You cannot reliably pose a newborn. Concentrate on a sharp, unobstructed face, even light and a plain background, then review the expression afterwards. See the baby passport photo guide for the overhead setup. A crying, yawning or wide-smiling frame should be replaced.

- Look directly into the camera with both eyes open.
- Hold the head level. A tilt is a pose problem, not an expression problem; see why passport photos get rejected.
- US: neutral or a small natural smile.
- UK: mouth closed, no smile.
- Remove glasses unless you have the limited US medical exception; see glasses in a passport photo.
- Take extra frames so you are not stuck with one exaggerated smile.
