Can You Wear Glasses in a Passport Photo?

For a US passport photo, remove your glasses. The US Department of State does not allow glasses except in rare cases where a doctor signs a statement that they cannot be removed for medical reasons.
That US rule applies even when the lenses are clear and you cannot see any glare in a small preview.
Why glasses fail review
Frames can cover the eye sockets. Lenses bounce a window, lamp or camera flash. Tinted or photochromic lenses hide the iris. A reviewer needs a clear, unobstructed view of both eyes.
Editing glare out is not a workaround. Changing the eye area can make the photo look altered, which is another rejection reason. Retake the source photo instead; see common rejection reasons.
What to do before you shoot
- Remove the glasses before you set the camera height.
- Wait if the pads leave marks on your nose.
- Face a broad, soft light so both eyes are even.
- Keep the camera at eye level and look into the lens.
- Check the sharpest frame at full size before you upload it.

What about a medical exception?
The Department of State describes a limited exception when glasses cannot be removed for medical reasons. A signed statement from a medical professional must go with the application.
Daily wear, poor uncorrected vision or a preference for glasses does not qualify. Read the current official instructions for the documents your case needs.
Do other countries allow glasses?
Rules differ, and they change. GOV.UK currently tells you to take glasses off so the eyes are fully visible. Some Indian photo specifications still discuss clear lenses without glare; Fogkits still recommends removing glasses so the eyes stay unobstructed.
